Is India safe for a touring cricket side?
Published July 2026 · Maidan Cricket Tours
It's the question every committee asks — usually quietly, after the meeting: is India actually safe for a touring club side? It deserves a straight answer rather than a brochure paragraph, so here is one.
What the official advice actually says
Smartraveller's India guidance boils down to: take normal care in cities, be alert in crowded places, avoid specific border regions (Jammu and Kashmir near the Line of Control, and parts of the northeast) — none of which feature on any cricket itinerary — and check the current advice before you travel, since it's updated regularly. Read it directly at smartraveller.gov.au rather than relying on anyone's summary, including ours.
What actually keeps a touring group safe
Group tours don't run on luck; they run on structure. The things that matter:
- Private transport throughout. A dedicated air-conditioned coach with a known driver for every transfer, match day and excursion. The group is never improvising taxis at midnight.
- Vetted hotels in the right locations. Established properties in well-trafficked areas, chosen by someone who has stayed in them — not off a booking-site star rating.
- A local network that answers the phone. The single biggest difference between a smooth tour and a stressful one is having people on the ground — club contacts, ground staff, a coordinator — who know the group is coming and are reachable at all hours.
- An emergency plan nobody expects to use. Nearest quality hospital identified for each city, insurance details centrally held, one person carrying the decision-making authority.
- Sensible group habits. The same rules as any tour anywhere: stay in pairs at night, watch your drinks, keep valuables in the hotel safe, agree a meeting point. India adds nothing exotic to this list.
Health, honestly
The most common health problem on any India tour is an upset stomach in the first few days — manageable with bottled water, sensible food choices early in the trip, and basic medication in the kit bag. See a travel doctor 6–8 weeks before departure for vaccination advice; requirements are routine for most itineraries. Our FAQ page covers the details, and heat management on match days matters more in practice than most exotic concerns: scheduled drinks breaks, shade at the ground and electrolytes are standard on a well-run tour.
What about the cricket itself?
Indian club cricket is welcoming to a fault. Touring sides are guests, and are treated as such — opposition clubs routinely host post-match meals and go out of their way for visitors. The cricket is competitive; the hospitality is genuinely part of why clubs come back.
The honest conclusion
India is a big, intense, occasionally chaotic country — that's part of the point of going. A touring club side experiences that intensity from inside a structured bubble: private transport, booked hotels, arranged fixtures and local contacts. Organised that way, a cricket tour of India is no more of a safety proposition than a tour to any major destination, and considerably better supported than most independent travel. The clubs that come home raving about India are the ones whose tour was built by someone who knew the ground.
